Review of Searching for Sugar Man (2012) by David F — 05 May 2013
Searching for Sugar Man is the best thing I have seen in years. Rodriguez released 2 albums in the 1970s, both of which bombed, and he disappeared from the music scene among various rumours of committing suicide onstage. Unknown to him, over the next decade or so he becomes the biggest star in South Africa, unintentionally inspiring a generation of white South Africans to protest against apartheid.
Fast forward 30 years, and a journalist decides to find out what happened to him, with amazing and inspiring results.
The documentary is so well structured that it had me sitting on the edge of my seat, absolutely fascinated by the series of events that occur. This has to watched. And when you've watched it, read the entry about Rodriguez on Wikipedia. It may influence your plans for the summer.
