Review of Searching for Sugar Man (2012) by Nathan M — 30 Nov 2013
A fascinating documentary about a mysterious musician who seemed to be forgotten in the United States, but made a huge impact in South Africa.
The Good: The subject matter is just fascinating, and writer/director Malik Bendjelloul has a fun way of telling the story. The use of illustrations to give the film a storybook quality was a great way of communicating the bizarre nature of the story. The music is fantastic, and I think I would probably by a Rodriguez album after watching the film.
The Bad: Nothing really bad here.
The Smugly: It doesn't seem to really go anywhere. I know it's just a story about Rodriguez, but after watching the film I found everything to be rather contained to just Rodriguez. This would have been a great chance to investigate the harsh realities of life in Detroit, but it certainly doesn't hinder the film's overall effectiveness.
