Review of Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993) by Keegan C — 28 Sep 2010
Searching for Bobby Fischer is one of those films that a lot of people have seen(parts of it at least) and many don't remember. Whether or not that hampers the film is up to personal preference, but aside from that the film speaks beautifully on it's own without manipulating the audience.
The cinematography by master photographer Conrad L. Hall is completely hypnotizing. From chess to the characters much is conveyed in the frames shot by Hall. The character portraits are complex and interesting to watch and most of the actors play their roles exceeding well, particularly Mantegna and Pomeranc.
Never at anytime does the film stoop to low levels with banal sentimentalities and ham-handed syrup which plagued many melodramas during the decade. In other words, this 90's drama actually trusts the audience.
