Review of Searching (2018) by Torion O — 30 Aug 2018
Solid modern day mystery. My impression from the trailer was that it would be along the lines of Unfriended, i.e., utilizing technology as a means of distraction from content, though the perspective via technology isn't gimmicky and adds to the audience's anticipation either with slow realizations Cho undergoes or with discoveries being made that leave the audience hanging for enough time before an update releases the tension.
In this aspect it's strangely effective in evoking emotions. The pivotal part, obviously, is Cho's performance which is more than up to snuff. The icing on the cake I suppose are the few instances of social commentary that are all too relevant regarding online media popularity contests.
