Review of Searching (2018) by James R — 07 Sep 2018
A very interesting film that has a pretty great story, a nice twist to it all, but just falls just a little short at the end. Searching is an interesting film because of the way it's presented. The theater screen is the screen of a laptop following a father named David (John Cho) who is searching for his missing 16 year old daughter Margot (Michelle La).
The story unfolds with David one night missing his daughters phone call and suddenly realizing the next day that she is missing after friends report they have no idea where she is either. As viewers we see David searching through social media sites to try and find her and getting help from a detective named Vick (Debra Messing).
The two begin to uncover more and more things about Margot's life that David had no idea about leading to the question was Margot taken, or did she have something else happen to her? The movie does a great job with pacing.
It even starts the movie in a similar way like the movie Up (2009) in the first 10 minutes that's very touching. You feel for David and the backlash he begins to get on social media. It's a fantastic movie that moves well and even takes place in San Jose, so it's slightly local.
The film falls just a bit short because I thought it ties up just a bit too cleanly. I don't want to spoil it. Overall, it even has a twist I had no idea would happen, but when it does it's great.
Unfriended: Dark Web (2018) only wishes it was even half as good as this film with the style they both use. This is a great movie that I think you should check out!
