Review of Seabiscuit (2003) by Me M — 26 Sep 2009
Gary Ross created a new American classic with this story of a group of down-on-their-lucks who find a used racehorse who becomes a legendary champion.
Borrowing heavily from Laura Hillenbrand's meticulously written historical novel, Ross draws a clear parallel between the story of Seabiscuit and the Great Depression which left 25% of the workforce floundering at soup kitchens and living in their Model-Ts.
My only complaint is the way he molded the dynamic of the three men into a 'family' in a Disneyish way, ignoring Pollard's drinking and the aggressive headbutting that must have really happened. Also, Pollard's alleged affair with Marcella is never even implied. Some more obvious character flaws might have made these characters a little more believable and a little less perfectly heroic.
