Review of Se7en (1995) by Griffin B — 25 Oct 2013
Boldly takes several huge, momentum-shattering leaps, but does so with expertise. There are some seriously unexpected surprises and uncompromising decisions made without much regard for 'pleasing the audience', especially in the final act.
The ending is bleak - perhaps a little too bleak. Either way, the cast is fantastic and the atmosphere is dense and iconic in a way that Fincher has become known for. What's maybe most impressive is that this movie is widely thought of as very gory, but you actually don't see much.
It's all after the fact; a crime scene, a witness' testimony, etc. But what you don't see, or what you imagine seeing, bothers you more than what you do see. Like in all great psychological horror.
