Review of Se7en (1995) by Wade T — 25 Dec 2012
Outstanding plot and acting performances spoiled by poor lighting.
Rational: Even back in the '90s, adequate interior lighting was the norm and crime scene investigators would set up their own equipment should circumstances dictate. That said, I saw the pervasive use of low-watt light bulbs as a flawed and unnecessary contrivance to maintain Se7en's dark visual tone. Whatever the rational, (Maybe audiences DO see well-lit horrors as kind of 'Cheery'?), the detectives acceptance of the low light levels just doesn't make sense given the rather dominant role vision plays in crime detection.
Bottom line: see first line.
