Direction, cinematography, set design, etc. as well as the cast and their performances are all excellent (well except for PItt, he was just fine but not great because I felt he overacted a bit). It's the overall look, theme and mood of the film that makes this film so memorable.
Though I remember when I first saw this, I was probably about 11 years old and rented this along with the film '12 Monkeys' and I felt this was boring and less entertaining than the latter, but this film has stayed in my memory longer and I actually can barely remember the story of '12 Monkeys' right now.
