Review of Se7en (1995) by Mike D — 08 Jun 2013
'Se7en,' one of the most gripping thrillers of the past 20 years, is an example of what happens when the perfect storm of great screenplay, cinematography and acting combine to result in an entertaining yet dark film.
David Fincher's classic follows Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as detectives who are tasked with unraveling the mystery surrounding a series of murders that are committed symbolizing the seven deadly sins, and the psychotic clues that are left along the way.
There's something about 'Se7en' that is really intriguing - maybe it's the endless rain that is in almost every single scene, or possibly the religious overtones that are ever present.
Whatever it is, the film benefits greatly from it. It is also interesting to watch how the relationship between Pitt's and Freeman's characters develops over the course of the film as things continue to get more and more twisted.
Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Paltrow also do a great job in supporting roles, with Spacey's performance being particularly noteworthy. There are also plenty of memorable lines from 'Se7en,' and of course, the final scene is one of the most memorable scenes in cinematic history.
As far as smart, suspenseful mysteries go, 'Se7en' ranks high up on that list, and likely will be remembered for a long time.
