Review of Se7en (1995) by Kyle L — 28 Mar 2014
Se7en is one of the greatest movies ever made and it is also one of David Fincher's best movies plus this is also one of the best Horror Thrillers in the 90's and Se7en acts both as a Horror film and a Psychological Thriller at the same time.
The plot of this film is about two detectives who are tracking down a serial killer who is killing each of his victims based on the seven deadly sins. To be honest I love this movie seriously it is a fantastic Horror Thriller.
I've already watched it for the third time and yet it is still a captivating movie at the exact same time and David Fincher managed to create a world that's falling apart. One of the film's highlights is that unlike most serial killer films where we get to see the kills.
In Se7en we don't see any of the kills and instead we are introduced to each victim and the two detectives show pictures of each victim(Very disturbing to picture in your mind) in the film and they also describe how each victim was killed in disturbing, gruesome, unsettling, unnerving and bizarre ways(An obese man forced to eat and eat until he dies, A lawyer forced to cut a pound of his own flesh, A beautiful model who gets her nose cut off and is force to commit suicide rather than live with an ugly face)and seriously this movie is very disturbing and unnerving and every kill described in the film is really disturbing to picture in your mind(The lust victim is by far the most painful kill in the film).
The othergreat things about Se7en is that the film also has a fantastic cinematography from cinematographer Darius Khondji and an effective soundtrack from Howard Shore also the film has a lot of impressive and scary scenes(The opening scene of the film my god I love that creepy and dark opening scene where we see glimpses of the killer's hands and notes and the Sloth victim is the scariest part of the film)plus the settings also look fantastic(John Doe's apartment and the Sloth victim's eerie flat along with the deserted highway in the finale)but one of the best moments of Se7en is that the film has a surprising and unexpected plot twist that will keep you guessing until the end(Gwyneth Paltrow's head in the box is one of the most unexpected and shocking scenes of the film)and the climax is totally full of surprises and the finale is one of the scariest endings in movie history thanks to David Fincher's intelligent and flawless directing and Andrew Kevin Walker's dark screenplay that has the best twist ever.
Now the acting in this movie is fantastic all of the casts in this movie did a very good job with their work in the film. Morgan Freeman did an amazing job with his performance as the soon to retire Somerset same with Brad Pitt as the short tempered rookie David Mills and Kevin Spacey delivers an extremely creepy and haunting performance as the intelligent killer John Doe and the rest of the casts also did the same thing(Gwyneth Paltrow, R.
Lee Ermey etc...)all of the casts did a very good job with their work on this movie so far. Director David Fincher did a fantastic job with his work on this movie along with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker and David Fincher managed to turn Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay into a dark and disturbing thriller.
Plus Fincher shows proof that he is a talented and smart director at the exact same time and this is his best film since Zodiac and The Social Network. Overall Se7en is a fantastic Horror Thriller that is full of unexpected plot twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end and it is a movie that will disturb you for the rest of your whole life.
This movie gets a 10/10 David Fincher you are one helluva genius!
