Review of Scream 4 (2011) by Jesse M — 17 Jun 2013
Upon announcing a fourth film I was apprehensive about it. I felt that the franchise ran its course with a satisfying trilogy of films( 3 was weaker I know ), and that a fourth film would let the air out of the effective ending to the third film about "trilogies" mind you.
After seeing it though, it managed to impress me in its approach. It doesn't necessarily negate the trilogy since its theme is "remakes". After 11 years, Craven directs another fine addition to the series besting even the more flawed but entertaining predecessor.
It doesn't reinvent the wheel like Scream 1, but keeping that wheel spinning smoothly is exceptional. Unfortunately Craven was a few years too late in delivering this film. The box office results reflected not the quality, but the current pop culture interest.
Scream just isn't as relevant these days despite being well made horror films. A real shame.
