Review of Scream 4 (2011) by Kyle S — 16 Aug 2015

The Scream series is beloved by my generation specifically and the series literally wrote the book on humor horror of the 90's and proved that movies could be scary and yet poke fun at themselves while scaring people.

The mystery of it all seems to catch the audiences attention also. I however was never a giant fan of this technic and Scream 4, although a well timed sequel, was average at best. I can't exactly tell if the acting is truly terrible or if it's just the humor of the movie but either way it doesn't do justice to the film, there were times when I actually had to turn my head away from the screen because of the poor performances by the more experianced of the core actors, especially the duo known as Courtney Cox and David Arquette.

Their acting alone was enough to ruin parts of the movie and to find newcomer to the film industry, but a great actress nonetheless in the television show "Mad Men", Alison Brie chose the wrong movie as her big debut on the big screen.

All of that negativity said, I was impressed by the group of newcomers including the tag team of Rory Culkin (always a treat) and Eric Knudsen and of course one of my favorite young actresses at this time, who especially plays a great horror survivor, Emma Roberts performance is one of the few positive things I can say.

The start of the film kind of says it all. A movie within a movie within amovie, it is all getting rather old and I would have liked to have seen some better plot decoys put in rather than an update of the exact same thing that brought fans to the series in the 90's.

I hate to say it but this Horror series should have been left alone for a few more years or put in the hands of more capable producers and a better director.
