Review of Scream 4 (2011) by David L — 24 Jun 2017
The long awaited 4th installment gives us just what we expected. All the familiar faces return for yet another bloodbath which continues in similar fashion to the rest of the franchise, which is kinda what we hoped for in all honesty given that this is in essence the cult classic series that started the slasher frenzy of the 90's. Following a similar trend to the previous episodes, this movie tends to build up the death scenes that little bit more towards the start of the movie, before turning into a relentless massacre of a showdown at the after party towards the very end. It continues to link in with the very first 'Scream' (although not referring to the other two sequels at all), meaning some of the plot wouldn't be understood had you not seen the original (but let's face it.......who hasn't seen the original?). Nevertheless, I doubt many people would worry about that if it's just a plain old slasher they're after. The gore content does seem to have been upped in this one, although perhaps in this day and age, the deaths could have been made a little more original than just a stab wound. I mean we even had a catflap death in the original, but there's nothing of.
Such originality in this one. I was a little surprised at the ending also, as without giving anything away, the twist seemed all too familiar. Understandably, I guess coming up with a new and believable twist for the 4th time must be getting difficult now, but for a film that has been the basis of many a spoof film of late, it at times appeared to be spoofing itself. Aside from that, it's a thumbs up from me, and I definitely wouldn't say no to a 4th sequel.
