Review of Scream 3 (2000) by Sam B — 23 Feb 2012

Although the thriller and mystery aspects of the story mostly work, Scream 3 is much more tongue-in-cheek than the prior two installments. It seems to make fun of the first two, in a manner of speaking.

So much of the effort seems just insincere. There is a ghostly dream and cameos from Jay, Silent Bob, and... Princess Leia. And none of that quite works... at all. All of that said, the general idea of the movie, its overarching plot, is very smart and the perfect conclusion of the trilogy.

Unfortunately, there are far too many hiccups along the way to the conclusion. Again, the script just seems insincere. It misunderstands the humor of the first two. The humor in the first two was in the background.

In the foreground, there was fantastic drama and suspense. This time, the suspense and drama take a backseat to the far less successful attempts at humor. However, toward the end of the film, the film starts working a lot better.

At the very end of the film (where the characters are left emotionally), it really feels like the end and, as much as I look forward to the fourth installment in the series, I kind of like leaving the series at this point, with number 3 being the last.

The story begun in the first is finally completely over. It's time for Sidney and company to just live their lives. They've been through enough. Also, the moral of the story has finally come full circle with Sidney exclaiming, "God why don't stop your whining and get on with it.

I've heard all this sh*t before... Do you know why you kill people Roman? Do you?... Because you choose to. There is no one else to blame... Why don't you take some f*cking responsibility?".
