Review of Scream 3 (2000) by Matthew F — 27 Apr 2011
Scream 3 follows on from where the last ended. Sydney has moved out to the middle of nowhere and has shut herself off from the outside world. Gale weathers has become anchor for network television. Dewey has left the police force in woodsborough and become a technical advisor for the new stab 3 movie. The Horror begins when cast members start to get murdered by the ghost face killer.
Even though it is stated as the final in the scream franchise it doesn't have much finality, it ends like most horror films, open ended. Despite being a horror film it isn't extremely scary but it tries to shock, scream seems to make a satirical look at the horror genre. Wes Craven is a great director but he had seemed to have fun poking fun at his own genre of film.
The performances aren't as powerful as in the original, but Campbell, Cox and Arquette do standout and newcomers don't do much in adding to the overall experience.
Although it does suffer from sequel blues it does have a story that is consistent with the other films. The main characters do carry the film among a large group of newcomers best by far is Dempsey and others. Wes Craven has made a good film but it doesn't come as a good horror film.
