Review of Scream 2 (1997) by Kyle J — 20 Oct 2012
The story that had to be told. The irresistable characters that had to live on, for some just to be killed. Scream 2 is a sequel that pokes fun at a genre without really being any. Although it works on some levels, the basic logic of the thing is flawed especially considering it spends so much energy establishing how not to behave in a horror movie and then just shows victim after victim falling prey to the same conventions.
As a mystery it turns out surprisingly weak. Too many red harrings and not enough payoff wit the final reveal. As with the first film there is some suspense but no real horror. As most of the fear leaves the shoot as soon as the fearsome killer falls over the furniture or has a bicycle thrown at him. and don't even get me started on Dewey. Apparently the only reason he lived to see this sequel is because he tested well with audiences. With WHAT AUDIENCES?! Arquette's "acting" is brutal to sit through. All in all, it's fun to make fun of and yell at but falls flat in what it attempts to be.
