Review of Scream 2 (1997) by Jeff H — 24 Apr 2011
Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson continue the story of Sydney Prescott as Ghostface returns to finish the job. It is quite funny how they mention that sequels are inferior to the original film in "Scream 2"--they had that in mind all along. The funny part is that this sequel is probably better than the original.
Neve Campbell reprises her role as Sydney, and she's as brooding and cautious as ever. Courtney Cox and David Arquette also return as Gail Weathers and Officer Dewey to help Sydney discover the identity of Ghostface. They all do a really good job at developing their characters while never straying too far from their roles. They're solid, and it's fun to follow them along.
While "Scream 2" isn't a "horror" movie, it's definitely a thriller and Craven excels at creating tension and suspense. I have to say, every scene that features Ghostface is extremely well-crafted and intense. Bravo Mr. Craven.
If you're a fan of the original "Scream", you've probably already seen this. If you're a newbie, go back and see the first one and you'll be pleasantly surprised by this sequel. Watch out for those self-references and you're sure to have a good time with this. Recommended.
