Review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) by Brayden T — 05 Mar 2013
Sometimes people geek out over books. Other people geek out over bands. Or movies. Or fashion. Or videogames. Or..............I don't know.........moustaches. Rarely has there been a form of entertainment that has combined every single one of those things (except maybe the moustaches) into one incredibly awesome package.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World IS that package. It's the kind of film that uses every technique in the book and yet NEVER feels pretensious. It's a love story set in a videogame-fantasy world where logic and reason go outside for a cigarette break.
If you can suspend disbelief for about 90 minutes, I can't imagine how you couldn't love this film (and if you can't suspend disbelief.......what the hell are you watching movies for in the first place?).
It's a world where our hero has to battle the seven deadly ex's of the girl of his dreams. It's a world where characters talk in the most hilarious cadence and jokes fly by and fold back in themselves at break-neck speed.
It's a world where a bass battle can determine who gets defeated (so.....so.....badass). The cast is pitch-perfect and there's not a weak one in the bunch. The special effects are often jaw-dropping.
And the music? Let's just say that, at the beginning of the film, when Scott and his band break into the song that carries us over the opening credits, my reaction was exactly like Scott's fake high-school girlfriend, Knives.
I fell instantly in love with it and that love grew as the film progressed. It's the kind of movie that you judge people by: if they like it, then they are friend material; if not, they must be SHUNNED!!!! Seriously, see this.
Now. Turn off the critical part of your brain and let the film win you over.
