Review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) by Seth Y — 22 Mar 2013
Based on the series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is outstanding film that is not only unique, but also visually stunning.
Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera, in what is easily his best role) is an average young guy living in Toronto. When he becomes acquaintances with Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), he quickly realizes she is the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately for Scott, Ramona comes with a catch; seven evil ex-boyfriends who aim to destroy any other guy she is with. In order to be with Ramona, Scott must defeat each of the unique exes that are standing in his way.
Upon first glance, this sounds like an amazing comic book plot, but I was very skeptical about how this would translate into a live-action film. Surprisingly, director Edgar Wright knocked it out of the park and created a fantastic movie. There is such a creative visual style going on here. At points, you feel like you are watching a video game within a film, which is totally fun and interesting. The fight sequences are absolutely incredible, each with their own style. Michael Cera is terrific and the gorgeous Mary Elizabeth Winstead also shines as Ramona Flowers. This movie is one-of-a-kind, action-packed, and completely hilarious. 5 stars.
