Review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) by Rick R — 12 Feb 2014
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010).
There were some things that I really liked about this Teenage RomCom (the comic book, anime, and 8-bit video game references were okay, I guess), but some things were just plain awful.
Michael Cera, who has played the same nerdy kid to death, in countless movies, (and he's done them in better movies) is frankly terrible in this. His Scott character, is 22, a pretty good base player in a band, and yet he's so passive-aggressive, whinny, and so far in the closet, that he can see the Christmas presents.
He's dating a high school girl five years younger than him, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong) who pretty much worships him, and yet they haven't ever kissed. All the other women in his life seem to hate his guts (ex-girlfriends?).
Then he bumps into Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and falls madly in love with her. She seems to like him back, although at a cautious distance. The problem is that she's got seven ex-boyfriends that want to fight Scott to death for the privilege.
One of the things that I didn't get was that Scott and Ramona don't seem to have any chemistry or passion with each other. Scott doesn't have enough passion to be up for fighting all of these people. I liked the movie, but I just didn't love it and can't recommend it as highly as other movies.
