Review of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) by Tim S — 30 May 2014
My favorite film of 2010 was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Then again, anything Edgar Wright is at the directing helm on is usually my favorite film of its particular time period. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley, the film is an overall amalgam of styles, genres and tones.
This is the most likely reason why it failed to make an impression at the box office (and why it split opinions of it right down the center). Fans of old school gaming consoles, comic books and anime have given the film its strongest following and greatest appeal, but the so-called mainstream audience for it is pretty much nonexistent.
That's ok though. It was an instant cult classic (a phrase I hate using, but it's the only one that really applies). It found its audience right away, but it did better on home video than theatrically, which is a shame.
Years later, it's still a tour-de-force of filmmaking and a just fun ride overall.
