Review of Scorned (2013) by Dillinger P — 31 Mar 2015
Watching Scorned is like watching a car crash, its a complete disaster but you kind of want to stand about and witness the outcome. Kevin and Sadie have been going out for 6 months, when Kevin decides to take her on a remote getaway at his luxurious villa.
Only problem is that Sadie is completely bonkers and Kevin just happens to be cheating on her... with her best friend. So instead of do the rational thing that most people would do, scream, shout and then walk out.
Sadie decides to hold both her best friend and Kevin hostage, in a random act of torture. Oh and I almost completely forgot, the film is also about a man who has escaped from prison... This film is a travesty, it treats its audience like brain dead morons.
Thrusting everything in our face, in big, bright, bold colours. Sadie has to have continual flashbacks of her abusive child hood which she also talks about in great detail, so why so us the flash backs? Sadie's motives are never really clear, she wants to torture her partner and friend because they had an affair, okay fair enough youd be pissed and maybe a little violent, but take them hostage and start torturing them is either going to get you killed or put in prison.
Unless of course there is an escaped criminal floating about who you can blame all that on right? His inclusion is so obvious as a get out of jail free card its insulting. The only reason we are subjected to this guy, a lot, running from the cops, is so the director can wrap the film up.
It also doesnt help that every single character is shit. Billy Zane is just a shitty boyfriend, who lies, cheats and see's women as expendable. AnnaLynne McCord is just your typical bat shit person, who you draw very little sympathy towards and Viva Bianca is well your best friend that has cheated on you with your boyfriend.
She is actually the most likable character in the film, were it not for every attempt when she tries to get away comical and stupid. The film doesnt know what it wants to do, its as if the director just went in filming with a concept and no script and made it up as he went along.
The pacing is all off, I dont give a shit about a criminal who I know is going to have an outcome on the end, whys he in there? Why am I continually jettisoned away from the main plot for this prick? hes not even a good actor, in fact hes laughably bad.
The acting from the top 3 however is passable and this is where the film hooks you. Its a dull and tried and tested formula, however because of McCord's performance you are generally interested to see how far she will go, although once she begins to reference the film Misery, the dots begin to join themselves.
The film also looks pretty good, its lit well, shot decently enough, the composition is pretty good, it has a nice contrast of colours, the interiors all look nice, the effects are top notch. It just isnt a very good film, its all over the place.
Add on top that the film insinuates that all men a sleazy, cheating bastards and all women are sluts, yes this film pretty much suggests that and its slightly insulting. It will kill an hour and a half but it could be an hour an a half watching something a lot more enthralling.
