Review of Score: A Film Music Documentary (2017) by Jorden D — 30 Jun 2017
I've had the pleasure of seeing SCORE: A Film Music Documentary on three different occasions. Partially because of the different composer Q&A's at the screenings, but also very much so because I felt there was more I could get out of seeing the documentary again.
The documentary takes a look at many different facets within the world of film music composition. It does this by making a loose narrative, mainly driven by interviews with the top composers in film music today. It doesn't linger much on any given subject, but crams a ton of information into a relatively short period of time. This documentary was fantastic for what it was; a look into the world of film music, the history of it, the processes that composer go through to create a good score, and the drive behind these creators. It doesn't try to be a comprehensive look at the history of film music or any given composer, and that seems to be where most negativity is coming from, people who want that sort of documentary.
This documentary highlights so many of the reasons why it is I want to be a composer in the film world; it serves as an inspiration, and I think can really introduce the general public to a vast world that they didn't know was there. I applaud the work put into this documentary and the final film.
