Review of Score: A Film Music Documentary (2017) by Kristofer H — 05 Aug 2017
Proper Perspective: Like a concert, one can put on their favorite song at home and enjoy it, just the same for the scores this movie highlights. But there is something special seeing live music, or in this case, seeing the composers talk about their work on the big screen. Let's talk about Score: A Film Music Documentary...
Official Synopsis: This documentary brings Hollywood's premier composers together to give viewers a privileged look inside the musical challenges and creative secrecy of the world's most widely known music genre: the film score.
Plot: A look into the history of the music score from organs in silent films to the technology of today with the greatest living musicians.
Take: This was awesome. I really like movie music and listen to it at the gym, at work, and in the car to relive scenes and moments. So this was tailor made for me and I would probably have enjoyed it regardless of the quality. Thankfully, the quality was up there and this was a very good documentary about the evolution of movie music and composers.
One thing that has to be pointed out is that the movie seems to be funded and put together by movie studios, so the composition of the documentary itself has a slant. Then again they all do.
Score avoids doing something that could have been great and could have been the fatal flaw which is not relying solely on the names like John Williams and Hans Zimmer and so forth. There was not a half-hour detour to honor the Mount Rushmore of composers, rather they layered them throughout the entire film giving shine to animated film composers, smaller film composers, and others. In the end that worked very well.
Overall this is a documentary meant to celebrate movie composers and give a history lesson. It did its job and was very enjoyable.
Recommendation: Absolutely. In theaters if possible, but if not in general seek this one out. All movie lovers will really love this movie and music lovers the same.
Stay past the initial credits, there is a cool hat tip to James Horner...
