Review of Scoop (2006) by Spencer S — 31 Jul 2008
While "Scoop" doesn't compare to "Annie Hall" or "Hanna and Her Sisters." It is by far the most successful and funny of Allen's films in his recent run. This time he mixes the occult, murder mystery, romance, and comedy together to get a unique blend of emotions running through every scene.
Johansson does perfectly as the slightly Allen-esque heroine of the film, and she and Allen together are quite funny. Jackman plays one of the roles that he was made for, that of rich and suave but still slightly sinister love interest.
"Scoop" also has the right amount of style and product placement (something i've noticed as a hallmark in Allen's films, witness the Ralph Lauren scene in Annie Hall and all of the artist name dropping in Match Point) with Chopard and Henry Moore mentioned by name.
Also, Jackman's apartment in the film is simply stunning and I would move in at a moments notice. "Scoop" has lots of Allen's signature charm with a millennial sophistication that makes for a memorable and ultimately satisfying murder mystery/romance/comedy.
