Review of Scoop (2006) by Vagelakis — 12 Oct 2011
Scoop has its moments, but they are few and far between. Nothing in this film seems to click and Woody Allen, although a competent director is shown to be clunky and unimaginative behind the camera when the script is weak and can't deflect the viewers attention.
Johansson isn't bad playing against type as a quirky journalism student, but dressing her in frumpy clothes and glasses doesn't quite work to make the character believable. Hugh Jackman looks great, but that's about all that can be said about him, although to be fair, he wasn't given anything to work with. Woody Allen is just annoying, grating endlessly until you're quite happy with his unfortunate accident at the end, although that unfortunately is not the last of him.
Scoop is a cute little concept that is badly executed, and while I'm not a fan of Allen's he can do much better than this.
