Review of Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998) by Kara S — 03 Dec 2014
Being a Scooby Doo fan, I'm very picky about his movies. The live action movies suck and I enjoy most of his animated movies. This movie is my favorite Scooby Doo film period. Scooby is one of those cartoons where there is a lot of lighthearted humor and story, but this movie is actually the darkest and mature in my opinion.
The animation is very good especially for a T.V. movie. The voices are great and even Billy West is good as Shaggy. There is another crucial thing that makes this movie stand out and that is the story.
I mean having zombies in a movie is nothing new but, the reason and how they became zombies is really fascinating and actually very dark as a Scooby Doo movie goes. You can make an argument that this movie doesn't work because in the show they establish that there are no supernatural elements but hey, there is a talking dog in the movie so in a way it works.
Not only that, but this movie establishes that most of the gang are skeptics with paranormal stuff and they try to rationalize what's happening in the movie. I actually like the villains in this movie and I won't give away who they are but when I first saw this movie, it was a shock.
With that said, the imagery can be scary for younger kids (which i'm not saying is a bad thing) and the animation can really add to the images they show. In my opinion, this film is wonderful. Great animation, enjoyable voice acting, original story, amazing darker tone, this film is one of those movies where I can watch over and over.
