Review of Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase (2001) by Justin S — 13 Sep 2016
Ok look... Scooby doo on zombie island... GREAT! The Witches Ghost? Loved it! The Alien invaders... I wore the rewind and play buttons on my old VRC down until there was hardly anything left from rewatching.
.. And the cyber chase was no different... Key word here being "was"... I recently add the quadrilogy to my DVD collection as well, and do you know what the first three of the short lived filmography, had that cyber chase was lacking?.
.. Well I could make a list... Don't get me wrong I love cyber chase... I have since the first time I watched it... It's just that when considering its brothering films, it comes up seriously short.
.. Let's summarize the plot shall we?... Our beloved heroes go to visit a friend of theres in college who's designed a game based off of their lives... They learn a computer virus has been materialized into the real world(why it's labled a phantom, I have no idea) they decided to capture it but instead get dematerialized into the video game themselves.
.. They beat a couple of levels, and then Cue the classic montage of scenes in which they quickly beat almost the entire game in a matter of seconds, and then finally the story gets interesting... They run into none other than their very own computerized classic body doubles.
.. Except for shaggy who is the red shirted 80s Shaggy and scooby who has a never to my knowledge, before seen red color instead of the classic blue , because otherwise how would we tell them apart?...
This is my favorite part of the entire movie, as a matter of fact when I rewatch this movie I usually skip to this part... Why? It's simple!... Nostalgia! Nostalgia everywhere! So many classic monsters from many of the older series's all rolled into these final scenes.
.. Of course their screen time is eaten up by yet another montage... They beat the virus and go home... Now take away the nostalgia and what do you have? A really cool villain?... Ok... Maybe but besides that not much.
.. There is almost no story to this movie!.... Especially compared to the other three direct to home video films that they spit out before this one... But hey... At least we have the nostalgia, right? I want to give this movie five big shiny stars.
.. But the story just doesn't hold its own... So I'm gonna drop a couple of points... Just enough to get my message through, which still leaves them a nice little three star rating to show that this movie doesn't really suck.
.. It's just ....lacking... I mean they did after all try to make this movie as good as the other three...time?... And they would've gotten away with it too... If it hadn't been for this meddling man who's way too old to be griping about old animated movies!.
.. I'll throw in a Scooby snack for the effort... Thanks guys for such a beloved part of my childhood... May Scooby and the gang live on for many generations to come... Other wise what am I gonna have to complain about and obsess over at the same.
