Review of School for Scoundrels (2006) by Chris M — 31 Jul 2008
Wasn't sure how this movie was going to play out t start with but two 'indie cred' stars in the lead roles I figured it was worth a try.
Jon Heder plays another geeky/loser role but a bit more subtly than usual. Thankfully this isn't a one note character and the film is all about his growth out of that awkward, low self-esteem trap and into a self-assured but still warm-hearted guy.
The humour comes mostly from seeing the little guys stand up to the world otherewise it's a pretty standard boy meets girl/ boy loses girl/ boy gets girl back movie but with an edge.
The edge comes from Billy Bob Thorntons character and whether or not he truly is a masterful self-help teacher or the scoundrel above all others.
With each twist and turns the Ante gets raised and the stakes get higher. Will Heder's loser finally be a winner?
Great fun and no over the top slushiness or sentimentalilty.
I loved it!
