Review of Scent of a Woman (1992) by Jameson F — 30 Jan 2010
Understandably Pacino gets his long awaited Oscar nod for an excellent performance but the film itself seems to be missing something. An incredibly realistic portayal of a blind man, the realism of the rest of the film seems to be lost on the director.
The constant barrage of Thomas Newmans score trying its hardest to yank hard on your heartstrings, add to this the 'moving' final speech and its triumphant reception, the film stinks of falseity.
This being said, it is a product of its era and the industry at the time so can't be downtrodded because of this. Instead, I found Chris O'Donnell's character weak and uninteresting which made my interest in his side of the plot wane considerably.
Aside from this, the film is still watchable and enjoyable if only to marvel at one of the greatest actors of all time in action.
