Review of Scary Movie 5 (2013) by Justin W — 29 Aug 2013
Look, I can appreciate a good mocking of a movie. Scary movies are rife with mockable attributes, but this series needs to die a horror film death. If the other spoof movies (see - or don't see - also, 'Epic Movie', 'Superhero Movie', or 'Vampires Suck') weren't bad enough, when the series finally returned to the genre that started it all, it brought back the total lackluster attributes that derailed the spoof franchise altogether.
Mocking the 'Paranormal Activity' movies and 'Mama' was the primary goal here, but somehow, they managed to throw in 'Black Swan', 'Inception', and 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' too.
While all those movies have mockable scenarios, none were effectively ridiculed. Plus, with no real talent leading this thing - Ashley Tisdale (A Bug's Life) and Simon Rex (Superhero Movie) bear the brunt of the cringe-worthy scenes - it was left to Charlie Sheen ("Two and a Half Men"), Molly Shannon (Hotel Transylvania), Darrell Hammond (Epic Movie), Terry Crews (The Expendables 2), and Snoop Dogg to mumble their way through corny dialogue and general awfulness.
It's no real surprise that Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls) landed in this thing though. She'll probably do anything at this point for a paycheck. It's a bad attempt, a la 'Scream 4', to resurrect something that once had merit, only to be more disappointing than the end of 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'.
