Review of Scarlet Street (1945) by Max M — 09 Dec 2008
Edward G. Robinson is Chris Cross (what a name!), a mild-mannered bank employee and would-be painter who falls hard for femme fatale Kitty March (Joan Bennett) who, along with her pimp boyfriend (Dan Duryea), only uses him for his money - a situation that can only end in murder.
Director Friz Lang follows up his film Woman in the Window, from the previous year, and uses the same principal cast of Robinson, Bennett and Duryea, with another terrific noir picture that has a somewhat similar set-up as the afore mentioned film, but ends up moving into much darker and more psychological territory. Based on the French novel La Chienne by Georges de La Fouchardi¨re, which was previously filmed by Jean Renoir.
