Review of Scarlet Diva (2000) by Saffron S — 29 Nov 2007
While some discredit this movie as being sophomoric, I happen to have a rather personal place in my heart for it. Its brash, and loud and pulls no punches - which I love. The primal scream of a heart clawing its way back from the edge.
Saturated colours swirl and surround Anna out in the world but - like her apartment - inside her head there's no life or colour. Anna is cannibalized by everyone around her but stops short of being a victim.
She abuses herself with everything from cigarettes to sex but stops shy of being a tramp. She is cynical and at times almost as rotten and empty as the monsters around her, but she stops shy of being monstrous herself.
Shot in Digital about half a decade before everyone else realized how good digital can be, Diva is a vanguard film in about a dozen different ways. Worth the watch and worth consideration, even if you don't particularly love the subject matter.
