Review of Scarface (1983) by Willie J — 22 Feb 2014
I've heard the film described as "operatic". Isn't opera supposed to be something poetic or beautiful? "Scarface", to me, is better described as ugly. Not ugly as in the ugly used to describe "Battlefield Earth", but rather its construction.
It is campy, dull, and has no substance. Nothing like "8 1/2" where it offers something artful, nor like "Sin City" where it offers top-notch entertainment. "Scarface" relies too much on the hope that the audience can come to terms with its "reality".
Which is, basically, profanity, violence, and a bad leading performance.
