Review of Scanners (1981) by Hugo G — 26 Jun 2008
Starts off well enough as a generally effective horror with good atmosphere. But about halfway through it goes off the rails as the plot makes less and less sense, and the Stephen Lack's complete inability to act gets harder to ignore.
Still it has its moments (a literally mind blowing scene, the pleasingly violent final battle) and Michael Ironside is great as the bad guy. I don't usually say this, but it could benefit from a remake to polish off some of the patchier scenes.
