Review of Scanners (1981) by Karl G — 12 Aug 2008
It's definitely not one of Cronenberg's best. Though there are some gushingly good blood and gore effects that are used with his usual grotesque savvy, the story is lacking - the script kind of meanders around for awhile and never seems to know exactly what it's going to say.
The acting isn't very good, either, especially the lead, who speaks like he's reading a cue card off camera and sounds wooden as all get out. It can be engrossing, though, and Cronenberg is usually an entertaining enough director that anything he does is worth watching to some degree.
This is no exception.
