In addition to a purposefully off-putting (I believe) lead actor, a memorable and varied soundtrack, astonishingly unique effects and artwork, and over-the-top fight/death sequences, the story goes as deep as you like, from either a simple psych-scifi premise to a parable on the struggles of creativity.
