Review of Scanners (1981) by Charlene & — 04 Aug 2009
The odd thing about Scanners is that, if you pay attention to the story - the surface elements, anyway - it's real comic-book stuff. New strains of humanity, secret government organisations, telepathy - it's all very Marvel/DC. But it's not played that way. Not at all. It's played as an absolutely sober, almost cautionary sci-fi movie, with an atmosphere that rivals Kubrik's version of The Shining and with Cronenberg's now legendary interest in body-transformation.
Scanners is a great and at times stunningly visceral film and I'm at a bit of a loss for anything else to say, except that the special effects are great, Micheal Ironside absolutely steals the show and I can't wait to see the two sequels. I'm sure they're just fantastic.
