Review of Scanners (1981) by Erica D — 07 Aug 2009
Somehow I missed much of Cronenberg's early work, so now I'm playing catch-up. The downside is that I have incredibly high expectations for movies I've known about since I was a kid. "Scanners" had less of an impact on me because of this, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
More sci-fi than horror, the story is compelling and probably felt original back in '81, and the classic head explosion comes so early in the film, and is so cool, that nothing else in the flick really can hold a candle to it.
The ending is abrupt, but Michael Ironside's final assault on Vale feels iconic.
