Review of Scanners (1981) by Alyssa N — 08 Oct 2009
The special effects live up to all their psychic head-exploding glory, but it disappoints me that Cronenberg couldn't up with a remarkable or credible plot to go along with them, especially since anyone who's seen his other films knows how capable he is.
In fact, for such a unique premise, the story is surprisingly ho-hum, with lots of unnecessary and slow-moving dialogue that, for all the time spent on it, doesn't even explain things well half the time.
Not that most of the action sequences are any better, and there are times when it's almost comparable to your average poorly-acted B movie. But I canâ??t ignore the filmâ??s intense and thrilling climax, which was unlike anything Iâ??d seen before.
Add to that the brilliant twist at the end, and I really have to say that the last 15 minutes of this movie salvaged it for me. There was the Cronenberg I know and love, combining bizarre and incredible effects with his own creative vision to create something mind-blowingâ?¦no pun intended.
