Review of Scanners (1981) by Doug D — 23 May 2010
This movie is badass. The plot involves a group of "mutants" if you will who have strong telepathic powers. And of course like any "mutant-powers" there are those who wish to use their power for good and those who wish to use it for evil. And so begins what you could call a war between these type of scanners. It seems clear cut: good vs. evil, but I assure you it's not that simple. The special effects seem to be advanced for the time. And like a lot of Cronenberg's films there is quite a bit of body horror. Cronenberg is truly on of the most creative directors to ever make a film in the sci-fi/horror genre. This film is truly one of a kind. This makes the 5th film I've seen by David Cronenberg, and I hope to see more. I'd rank the 5 like this:
1. A History of Violence.
2. Eastern Promises.
3. Scanners/The Fly (I really can't decide which one I like more).
4. Videodrome.
