Review of Scanners (1981) by Richard C — 22 Dec 2012
One of the ever-dividing David Cronenberg's better films, Scanners is a wholly original, intense, chilling and clever sci-fi horror that serves as an inspiration for wannabe horror filmmakers wishing to make something inventive and memorable.
The sort of film which would have fallen flat if done by anybody else, Scanners is Cronenberg at his most surreal and overtly challenging that would be worth the temptation of being remade but ultimately would be best just left alone for the sole reason being that the film could not go as far being equalled by anyone other than its original master.
As a viewer who often leaves most Cronenberg films feeling disappointed, this is an example of Cronenberg's imagination taking us over and leaving us near enough mesmerized by a slightly debatable but otherwise correct and bearable ending.
Probably the best Cronenberg film after Dead Ringers.
