Review of Say Anything... (1989) by Marcus W — 23 Apr 2009
Cameron Crowe SO badly wants to be John Hughes, but he isn't. They graduate, they fall in love (within a week), she's going to England so her father convinces her to dump him but she doesn't really want to, then they get back together at the end and go to England together.
There's lots of talking ala Kevin Smith/Tarantino, but at least with those the talk is interesting/necessary, here it's just a dull monologue. Her Dad goes to prison but only for tax evasion. It's as if Crowe tried to think of the most harmless crime to be convicted of.
And that sums up this film: harmless. It's like a cute puppy dog that's had it's teeth removed so it can't possibly bite anyone. Though Lily Taylor is great.
