Review of Say Anything... (1989) by Paulie C — 05 Jul 2010

So this marks my 70th review so I thought I'd do a special movie review. So I decided to watch one of my favorites that I haven't seen in awhile.....

Say Anything is a film about 2 lovers that are total opposites and have just graduated High School. One of the two lovers is Lloyd Dobler(Cusack), who is a total Basic guy with nothing extraordinary. The other lover is Diane Court(Skye), a girl whose top of her class and total girl genius and is on her way to study abroad. The film is about these two coming together and the struggles they face as a teen couple.

The story for Say Anything was just amazing. It's the story that started all the cliches that are around now. The whole story was moving and totally proves that "teen love" can be more than just that. The story definitely shows that age truly knows no boundaries. When there were interactions, the dialogue was humorous and charming. What made this movie truly so much more was that the emotions and everything you wanted to say, could be said just by facial expressions, hand gestures, down to simple eye to eye moments between Dobler and Court.

The acting in this film was beyond sincere from Cusack. He played the totally awkward nervous guy and paved the way for actors like Michael Cera and all of that jazz. You were in the slumps when he was, you were happy when he was, Cusack pretty much poured his heart out in this performance. Skye's performance was also heartfelt. She gave you a first person view of all her problems at home and how they affected her. All the characters in the film were essential. The movie's characters were amazing because there is a character for everyone to relate to.

Overall, The film is my favorite "romance" flick(or whatever genre you prefer to dub it). The film is all sorts of amazing. Whether it be the touching script with the performances to go along with it or the relatability to each character, you couldn't help but love this film. The movie is still home to the legendary scene with Dobler outside of Court's window with a radio. I just wish most Romances today could capture a fourth of the emotion this film did. This film is definitely worth a buy. This is a film in all movie-goers collections.
