Review of Say Anything... (1989) by Wesley R — 12 Feb 2011
The only thing I knew about this film was the iconic scene where John Cusack's character holds a boom box over his head to try and win back the love of his life. After finally watching this film I was surprised by two things: how short the scene really is and how this isn't just another teen romantic comedy.
In fact, I would go so far to say that this isn't really a comedy, but a study in teen romance. What makes this stand above the other teen romances in film is the fact that the story treats the subject with respect and a realism that is too rare in films like this.
There's no outrageous situations or wacky characters, but people who simply want the best out of life which is something we can all relate to. Most of the film we're left wondering if Diane (Ione Skye) will follow the path her father (John Mahoney) helped lay out for her or stray from it to spend time with her boyfriend Lloyd (John Cusack).
The only thing that kept this film from being perfect for me was the fact that a subplot in the movie makes her decision much easier than it should have, but it isn't annoying or unrealistic at all just.
..convenient.
