My Review.
I gave her my heart she gave me a pen.
I honestly thought half-time I was watching a John Hughes movie, cause that's what this movie feels like to me at least. This was one of the few definitive 80's movies and I thought that it was a john Hughes movie cause it looked like The Breakfast club. In his directional debut Cameron Crowe creates a film with good humor but this shouldn't be seen as a comedy so much but a really good teen love story.
It's a graduation and Llyoid Dobler(John Cusack) has only one ambition to date Diane court(Ione Skye). She's beautiful, she's intelligent and to everyone's amazement, she actually agrees to go out with Lloyd. At first just friends with potential, lloyd and Diane quickly develop into something more. But when Dianes overprotective father convinces her to end the relationship, a brokenhearted Llyod vows to try anything, do anything, and say anything to win her back.
Lloyd is tall, loyal, and true, tells the truth, and seems espically frank about the fact that he seems to have absoluetly no future. His career plans do not include college. He talks vaguely about a future as a kickboxer, but the only time we see him engaged in the sport professionly is when he's teaching a class of preschoolers. Diane on the other hand, is a golden girl, the class valedictorian, winner of a scholarship to England.
Most people go to love stories in order to identify, in one way or another, with the lovers. Usually they are of our trust, espically in the modern based teenage movies that celebrate cynicism, vulgarity, and ignorance. Say Anything is kind of emnobling. Say anything exsits entirely in the real world, it is not a fantasy or a pious parable, has characters whom we sort of recognize, and is directed with care for the humans feelings involved.
Say Anything depends above all on human qualites of its actors. Cusack and Skye must have been cast for their clear-eyed frankness, for their ability to embody the burning intensity of young idealism. A movie like this is possible because its maker believes in the young characters, and in doing the right thing, and in staying true to oneself. I give a Say Anything a five out of five.
