Review of Say Anything... (1989) by Becca W — 27 Apr 2014
This movie is so awful and it sends a terrible message about love. Only a true 80's teen could have been into this. It's very Romeo-and-Juliet-esque. Two young, stupid teenagers who over-romanticize their shallow relationship and fight very hard to be together, even though they hardly know each other.
I'd like to take a moment to complain about Diane. She's the most weak, wishy-washy female character I have ever seen. She never made her own decision that she stuck with throughout the entire film. Everything she does is done because Daddy told her to, or because it's what Lloyd wanted. God Diane, get a backbone. She also always seems to constantly need a male in her life to rely on. And her relationship with her father is almost creepy.
Diane and Lloyd's relationship was really lame, too. The only scenes that show the growth of their love are mostly scenes in which Lloyd is doing something chivalrous to take care of the ever-so-fragile-and-helpless Diane. We don't see them joking around or getting to know each other. We see Lloyd help Diane avoid stepping on glass, and Lloyd watching over Diane at a party, and Lloyd teaching Diane how to drive stick. Basically, we see Lloyd doing all the work, and princess Diane seems to loooove being taken care of. She doesn't do a single romantic thing for Lloyd, except (spoiler alert) let him in her pants.
There are a thousand other things wrong with this movie, but I won't spoil it for you. If you're into women being treated like dainty flowers, and men who act borderline creepy "in the name of love," go ahead and enjoy.
