Review of Saw VI (2009) by Elian D — 03 Aug 2012
Way (really: waaaaaay) better than the pervious one, but nowhere near the first three. The direction has improved again, but the dialogs suck and the acting is... well, its an improvement over some entries, but very lacking overall.
Additionally, in reframing the whole series they destroyed or otherwise forgot some the facts and rules already established for Saw-Universe.
By this point there are so many Jigsaw apprentices they almost outnumber the victims [and we still have one (or three) more to come]; and the games, even though they are still suposed to be designed by Jigsaw, don't seem to have a redeeming point for the victims, and this time isn't because Amanda is a Psycho, nor because Hoffmann is an A-hole.
The demonization of the insurance companies is hammered so much that it actually highlights the shortcomings of the script.
By the way... Does Lt. Detective Hoffmann [who, remember, we first met on Saw II leaning over a crime scene reviewing physical evidence] really have absolutely NO CLUE about forensics??? No idea whatsoever? I could look the other way while his sloppiness was leaving al kinds of traces, fingerprints, etc... But actually asking with a dumb look on his face about the knife blades, the freon and the voice reconstruction? The guy isn't qualified to give parking tickets... Let alone be gathering or handeling evidence.
The other issue is that Saw VI, like V did before, only gives a "half-movie". None of them works as a standalone film and you now really need to remember what happened on the previous installments to maybe be able to follow... Not in the way a sequel (like I thru IV) does, but in the way a tv soap episode works...
But yes, Saw VI is still waaaaaaaaaay better than Saw V.
