At least critics somewhat agreed that this was a fascinating step forward, surprising for a horror franchise's 6th installment. As a fan of the franchise, the amount of flashback "retconning" fed my thirst for more plot interweaving.
The strangely political direction the film takes was also an interesting surprise and kept it somewhat fresh.
